Burlesque bonanza at Retro Photostudio

Saturday, February 18th, 2012
Recently the studio was given over to a day of burlesque shoots. In the morning I had the pleasure to welcome Miss Phoenix back to the studio…her third shoot with me in the past twelve months. We were shooting publicity shots for her flyers.

As her shoot drew to a close, the troupe from House of Burlesque arrived.  For the past three years I have sponsored House of Burlesque’s popular Burlesque Idol competition, which goes from strength to strength showcasing and promoting new talent.  I have previously shot with two of the trio who arrived,  Miss Betsy Rose and Jolie Papillon, but it was good to finally meet HoB’s director Tempest Rose.

Shipwrecked

The brief was to shoot publicity for their Shipwrecked show.  Tempest was excited to see the plethora of nautical props available at the studio. Although we did not need to use all of them the studio has two genuine ship’s wheels,a vintage life preserver, ship’s barrel, telescopes, captain & sailor hats, mooring ropes, anchor…well, you get the idea!
The primary publicity shot used their own prop cases – and you can see the finished result below.

Vintage, retro & rockabilly at the Pelirocco

Monday, February 6th, 2012

Last Friday we loaded the car down with retro props, camera and lighting gear and set out for Brighton.  Our destination – Hotel Pelirocco…the goal to get shots of the various strikingly different themed rooms, then to do a shoot with a number of talented models.

Fortunately we were based in the Bettie Page room which is only on the first floor – it proved easier to drag the bags of kit up the stairs rather than squeeze into the pint-sized lift!   Some of the rooms are perfect for shooting, although our room of choice had already been booked.  I won’t tell or show too much here as the images are slated for use in a couple of magazines.

Time would be tight, as new guests would be checking in mid-afternoon, but in the interim we were lucky to have been offered a window for shooting in an additional four rooms.  So as soon as each model was made-up and coiffed, it was a choice of outfits and off to one of the rooms.  After a day of climbing up and down four flights of narrow stairs, carrying lighting and cameras, my knees really started to let me know they were not happy!

 Brighton early…

It was bright and early on the Saturday when we welcomed Verity and Gemma from The Vanity Box who were to look after the hair and make-up.  Space was at a premium, so the girls set up in the bathroom area.  I have to say that this team created some amazing retro looks, working from the most cramped area you can imagine.

 Dresses, lingerie and…

We were really lucky in our outfits as we had a wide selection for the girls to model: first there was a selection of vintage lingerie, corselettes, bras, girdles and vintage stockings from Sleek ‘n Chic.  You can view a couple of the outfits here.

Then we had rockabilly and retro dresses from Lady-K-Loves and Outerlimitz, and jewellery from Bow & Crossbones.

 The models…

By 8:30am Sam Huggins was undergoing her transformation as our first model.  This was Sam’s first vintage shoot, and I thought she did really well…although every time she caught sight of her reflection she could not believe it was really her!

From there on until 6:30pm was a blur of photography (maybe an inappropriate turn of phrase there!) as Miss Lula Mae arrived, followed by Acid Doll and Miss Phoenix.  I have shot with all three of these models before.

Acid Doll was over on a fleeting visit from Belgium, and has the pin-up style really sewn up.  She is a chameleon, always able to produce different looks and a consummate professional.  Lula Mae has a classical vintage look, and an amazing collection of vintage outfits…she could have stepped straight out of the pages of a fifties Vogue magazine!  Miss Phoenix is an up-and-coming burlesque artist with gorgeous red hair and great expressive eyes.

The technical stuff

For those interested in the photography side, my goal was to rely as much as possible on natural light, supplemented by either diffused flash or reflectors, just to fill in shadows.  I’ve always tried to shoot at low ASA to minimize grain, and today, on my Nikon D700 I worked between 200ASA and 800ASA.  This created a few issues, the primary one being the wide apertures and slow shutter speeds.  Often I found myself shooting with aperture wide open, and sometimes with shutter speeds as low as ¼ second, not the best recipe for sharp images!  To minimise camera shake I used a monopod, but there were a percentage of images where slight movement of the model gave unwanted motion blur. In the future I will have greater confidence in the camera’s higher ASA speeds!

The results…

It took quite a while to check and sort the results, but I am delighted to say there are several hundred really good shots which you should soon be able to enjoy on the stockists’ websites, and in various magazines too.  A big thank you to all involved, including my wife Debbie who helped style and ironed all the outfits too!

Collectif’s Spring/ Summer 2012 collection photoshoot

Friday, January 13th, 2012

This week started with shooting Collectif’s Spring and Summer collection. I was joined by Nicole Grzywok and Tara from the company, and the delightful models SINderella Rockafella and Cervena Fox.  There were a lot of stunning outfits in some great fabrics; I am sure this collection is destined for success.

It was quite a hectic day – over 1200 shots, so we were all kept very busy, but such experienced models made my life very straightforward.

Preparing the pictures for use online and on posters was a little time consuming.  Note to self for the future:  cover or remove labels from the soles of shoes…it will save a lot of retouching time later!

I thought you might like to see a little behind the scenes – the shots the girls would rather you not see!

“How long until I get the finished images?”

We finished shooting late on Monday.  By Tuesday the proof gallery was already posted and final image selections were being made by the company.  The first lists were sent over to me on Tuesday and by Wednesday the finished images, formatted both for web use and for poster or flyer use were already back with the company.  Within four days of the shoot they had 250 images and were posting them on their website!

Internet retailers need to know they can rely on getting quality images with minimal delay…time really is money.

You can already see the teaser shot below on the Collectif website.

Vintage Twists – rockabilly & retro styles

Sunday, January 8th, 2012

Browsing the internet I happened across a new website,Vintage Twists, selling ‘modern dresses with a vintage style’.  It felt like passing someone in the street, then realising as you pass, and do a double-take, that you know them from somewhere.  It was great to see Vintage Twists banner features several recent Retro Photostudio shoots for Limb dresses.

I wish this very clean looking site with its selection of well-chosen products every success.

Website photography promotion

Friday, January 6th, 2012

A good picture may help sales, but a great picture will really boost them. Why else would major brands hire internationally acclaimed models and photographers at significant expense to showcase their products?

Retro Photostudio now has greater capacity, so we are delighted to launch our new client promotion*.  If your business sells clothing, lingerie or accessories online this is an offer you cannot refuse!

recent jewellery shoot for Passionate about Vintage

Small start-up businesses work to extremely tight budgets, so this promotion will assist them to get them established, enabling them to compete,  showcasing their work as professionally as larger companies.

New Client photoshoot promotion – save money!

New clients, booking a product shoot before 1st April 2013 (the shoot can actually take place at any mutually convenient time during 2012), will get the studio plus photography for only £20 an hour, less a first day shoot discount of fifty  percent (yes 50%!).  So an eight hour shoot will cost you four hours.

What is on offer?

The studio, near Southend in Essex, is an Aladdin’s cave of props and furniture. It features a large ceiling mounted Bowens lighting rail system, with diffusers, grids and lighting modifiers. There are two backdrop systems. There is a separate dressing room and kitchen.

A proof gallery is uploaded for you after a shoot to select those images required. Images are retouched to magazine quality, and supplied optimised in web resolution and print resolution. Retouching and optimising starts at only £4.50 + VAT per image, with discounts for larger batches of images. (Mendoza “airbrush cheesecake” retouch style by prior quotation)

Why would I make an offer that appears too good to be true? Well, client satisfaction has always been my primary goal.  By delivering top quality photography and post-production, helping the client to realise their vision, bringing the end result in within a tight time-frame and at a really keen price, my client base has been expanding, with first time clients becoming regular ones.

The studio has a large register of models, so I can also help you select the ones most suited  to your specific project. There is also the option to utilise the services of my professional make-up artist and hair stylist.

The next step?

Get in touch via email, or on either 01702 713417 or 07895 045745 and I will be happy to discuss your project, including any special requirements you may have. Some clients ship products along for photography (which can save on travel!). Remember that packaged items may require steaming/pressing to look their best; pressing is a service the studio can provide for a nominal cost, should you wish.

* This promotion is limited by studio capacity. It may be withdrawn without notice.

Latex photo gallery

Saturday, December 24th, 2011

Latex has come a long way…rubber has metamorphosed from being a niche fetish market into high fashion outfits,  often gracing the catwalks around the world.

Over the past couple of years I have been privileged to be invited to photograph outfits for a number of leading designers and suppliers, so for an interesting change, in place of a lots of text,  I decided to post the small gallery of latex images below.  I have included links at the end of the gallery.

Solene – cover girl

Friday, December 23rd, 2011

What a lovely surprise to see Solene’s smiling face gracing the cover of January’s Milkcow Vintage, when the magazine popped through my letterbox today.  The day Solene came for the shoot we really worked hard, shooting catalogue shots for Sleek ‘n Chic, and editorial images, of which this is one.

I do owe a big thank you to Caroline and Peter Tuffrey for generously allowing me to use their amazing home as a location.  When they took it over the original owners apologised for its ‘dated’ look – but it had been just what the Tuffrey’s had been looking for!

Since then they have painstakingly restored and recreated a wonderful fifties environment.  Just to give you a better flavour of the ambience have a look at the images below, shot back in July for Bamboo Bettie range of retro dresses.

The shoot must go on!

Monday, December 19th, 2011

Today was a shoot for the Collectif ASOS online marketplace, with the lovely SINderella Rockafella.  One of the Collectif stores is located in Camden Stables Market, a really exciting buzzing place with all sorts of niche shops and eateries, and with plenty of potential locations within a hundred yards.   Entering the store for the first time I was taken aback to be greeted by a dramatically larger than life version of a picnic image I had shot a while ago with Natasha Olrog and Poppy Scarlet.

Our plan was to find an uncluttered outdoor location to shoot a number of outfits…but what had not been factored in was the weather.  It was bitterly cold, and no sooner had the shoot started than so did a steady drizzle!  Fortunately SINderella was able to change in the store changing room, and was primped by Nicole Grzywok (who spent her time outside holding a brolly over SINderella, or myself!)

Behind the scenes

Nicole had earmarked as back-up, an area protected from the elements, but by the time the shoot got underway this was like rush hour on the tube…so we ended up outside, away from the crowds. Despite the soul-sapping bitter cold, a very, very chilly SINderella posed as if it were the height of summer (the images are not quite large enough to see her goose-pimples!).  You can see below how well she did.

You would never know it was raining…although at each outfit change I was having to remove water droplets from the lens!   And if you want to see the entire shoot, you can check out the great outfits  on the Collectif ASOS site

Food, glorious food…

Food photography – the art that conceals art

It seems deceptively simple , ‘just a picture of food’, yet there is a lot more going on ‘behind the scenes’ that poses interesting challenges for the photographer.

The brief is invariably to make the food look appetising, and that is a real team effort.

As a minimum, aside from the photographer, shoots invariably involve a food stylist, who is responsible for cooking the food and preparing it for the camera.

It used to be acceptable to cheat by using non-edible addatives, like varnish.  These days what you see should be the real food.

Take a look at this hamburger image.  Before any serious shooting took place a ‘dummy’ burger was positioned so I could set up the various lights and reflectors and judge depth of field, shadow detail etc.

Then the food stylist got busy; initially she cooked a dozen burgers, picking the best looking as her ‘hero’ to star in our picture.  However this was not quite a perfect specimen, so she used a scalpel to remove slivers of meat from the other burgers to fill in the slight irregularities in the surface.  Next she carefully cut a half dozen buns – and picked the one the had the cleanest cut edge with no crumble.

The same care now went into the assembly of the burger…specially chosen lettuce leaves were coaxed into position with tweezers.  The tomato slices were similarly painstakingly positioned, and a few tiny water droplets added to their skin just prior to shooting to enhance their ‘succulence’.

Next the chips were built up behind the burger, adding a chip here and there, repositioning, until the composition looked just right.  Test shots were being taken all along so the finished effect could be judged.

So in this ‘simple’ shot you are looking at over two hours work from food stylist, photographer…and in this instance a chef from the theme park plus a marketing manager!  And you would not believe the heated debate that took place over the positioning of a single chip, and whether the lettuce was in exactly the right position!

Oh, and if you are wondering about the where the technical information is about shooting food…I will leave that for another blog entry…just to keep you coming back!

Lili La Scala performing in Southend

Thursday, December 15th, 2011

What a pleasant surprise to open the local paper yesterday to find a half page portrait from a recent shoot I had done with the lovely Lili La Scala.   You can see more on my work on her website.   It was an even bigger surprise to turn on the TV in the evening just in time to enjoy husband Sam, A.K.A The Boy with Tape on his Face, on stage at the Royal Variety Show.  If you get the chance to see The Boy with Tape on his Face jump at it – really, really funny.

Sam has previously been to the studio shooting publicity shots involving him hammering long nails up his nose (not one to try at home!).  It was a somewhat surreal experience going through the proof images on screen with Sam standing beside me, still with a six inch nail sticking out of his nose!
