Cherry Shakewell – Goldfinger!

Friday, September 30th, 2011

I was delighted when international burlesque artist Cherry Shakewell forwarded me a copy of the September 2011 Volupte showguide featuring her ‘Goldfinger’ portrait I’d shot a year or two ago.

Having worked with Cherry a few times and have to say it is always a pleasure – she is such a charming lovely person to shoot with.  This image Volupte selected happens to be one of my own favourite portraits – for those interested in the technical aspects, here’s a little resume:

Shot with a Nikon D2X, fitted with the Nikon 105mm close up lens – this lens has to be my favourite, producing pinsharp images and yet subtle gradations; the other Nikon lenses produce a ‘harsher’ more contrasty image.  It was shot at f11, and the lighting was a Bowens fitted with a beauty dish, along with a triflector.

The sparkly hands?   Cherry rubbed moisturiser into her hands, then dipped them in a bag of gold glitter…it worked really well, although I was still finding little glitter sparkles in the studio weeks later!

I minimally retouched, then boosted the shadow and highlights for a punchier image.  Oh, and I did cheat just a little by adding one or two photoshop ‘star-bursts’ where the sparkles were brightest.

Photoshoot with international burlesque star Leia Lockheart

Monday, September 26th, 2011

We had been discussing getting together for a shoot for some months, so it was a real delight to finally meet Leia Lockheart, the burlesque performer from Los Angeles. She is in the UK for a fleeting visit, and made the detour to the studio so we could shoot for a few hours.

We managed to achieve two dramatically different sets – one very film noire low-key, and the other a riot of searingly vibrant candy colours (or should I say ‘colors’?!) .  As soon as we’ve shortlisted the favourites I will give you a sneak peek!

Burlesque x 4!

Saturday, September 24th, 2011

Today was the turn of Mary, Jennie, Annie and Nina…all students of Laura Lawton’s Foxy Burlesque 2011 class to perform for the camera.

They all travelled quite a way…Tunbridge Wells and even further afield, but arrived bright and early. Make-up artist and hair stylist Shonagh, ably assisted by Polly set to transforming the girls into sexy retro sirens.  Each girl admitted to a greater or lesser degree of apprehension when they entered the studio, but ten minutes into each shoot they were each enjoying themselves to the max…at the end of the shoot Nina confided that she had found the whole experience very ‘liberating’.
